Since social media has made its online debut, it has grown exponentially as the most popular choice of online and mobile communication. Looking at the statistics alone are enough to determine the impact such platforms have had on web users over the last 8 years. Worldwide statistics have revealed a rise in the use of social media from 0.97 billion in 2010 to 2.62 billion in 2018. Looking at the way social media has evolved in less than a decade, has proven its powerful global influence.

Research has determined the most common reasons for such significant online expansion including international users with access to the internet, active and non-active social media accounts. It is no surprise that the millennials (age 18-29 years) account for the majority of active social media users. Adults over 65 years are not left in the dark when it comes to modern technology. Almost 50% of global users over age 65 have social media accounts and regularly check-in online to catch up with relatives or make purchases.

The reasons for the increase in social media usage is owed to the extension of networks in developing countries. With more people able to access the internet, there has been an increase in social media activity.

  • Greater internet accessibility and smartphone connectivity.
  • In 2014 alone, the number of social media users grew by 20% owing to advancements in internet connections and mobile technology.
  • Facebook remains the leading social media platform, followed by Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram.

With over 1.5 billion people expected to connect to social media for the first time in a single year, the number of users is expected to rise. This is owed to continued online accessibility from advancements in Europe to Africa and Asia.
